The local talent market is vibrant yet faces persistent challenges, with employers racing to adapt hiring strategies and attract skilled professionals in an increasingly competitive environment.
Northern Ireland's labour market started 2025 with momentum: job vacancies are up 20% over the previous quarter and remain 44% above pre-pandemic levels. Nearly 80% of employment categories saw increased hiring intentions recently, with growth seen in Retail, Skilled Trades, Engineering, Healthcare, and IT. The construction sector, in particular, has twice as many postings as it did five years ago.
Administrative roles and remote/hybrid positions are also growing, with the NHS and private healthcare leading recruitment in digital care and flexible work arrangements.
Despite this optimism, higher employer costs and global uncertainty—driven by trade turbulence and shifting policies—make planning difficult for businesses, especially those reliant on international markets. While unemployment remains at historic lows, the working-age population is shrinking and long-term sickness rates are rising, contributing to widespread skills shortages. Four out of five employers still report difficulty filling vacancies.
To combat this, many firms are investing in automation and digital tools, particularly in healthcare, to streamline recruitment and address gaps in critical skill areas.
Inflation pressures have eased somewhat, but wage growth has slowed for most except for large jumps in the National Living Wage. High living costs—especially childcare and mortgage payments—mean many professionals are chasing better-paid roles. Employers must now focus heavily on their workplace culture, offering career development, flexible hours, and robust wellbeing support to retain talent.
Graduate job postings have declined, with competition intensifying for entry-level opportunities. Graduates need to demonstrate adaptability and digital proficiency, as these are increasingly sought after in growing sectors like healthcare and tech.
Invest in employer branding to attract and engage quality candidates.
Promote diversity, inclusion, and flexible work options to broaden the candidate pool.
Embrace upskilling and career development as key retention tools.
