Employers know that even their most valuable employees may one day move on to another project. Even so, they generally prefer to hire professionals who they believe are going to work for them for a long time, which is one of the reasons you might hear them ask, 'why are you looking for a new job?' or 'why did you quit your last job?' Answering these types of questions satisfactorily can help you secure the job.

One of the effective ways interviewers attempt to understand your true intentions is to ask, 'why are you looking for a new job?' Here are some of the reasons why interviewers may ask this direct question:

  • To understand your goals: Ambition can be one of the reasons for choosing to leave a former employer. People with clear goals usually impress potential employers, and when your goals match those of the interviewer, it can help them decide to hire you.

  • To determine how you fit the organisation: Employers look for skilled individuals who can fit into their organisation with little effort. Knowing why you're looking for a new job can help them determine how quickly you can adapt to the company policy, including their work culture and the demands of the job.

  • To know if you left your previous employer on good terms: Employers prefer hiring individuals who can have a cordial relationship with them throughout their association. Knowing the terms on which you left your previous work can help them improve employer-client relationships.
