Inside VANRATH: Emma's Move from HR to Recruitment

We’ve been chatting with members of our team to get their take on life at VANRATH – what brought them here, what they love about their roles, and what keeps them motivated.

This week, we caught up with Emma Hall, our Senior Consultant specialising in HR recruitment. With a background in HR herself, Emma brings a real depth of insight to her work – and her journey into recruitment actually started on the other side of the table, as a client.

In this Q&A, she shares how she made the move into recruitment, what makes VANRATH stand out in the HR space, and why she finds her role so rewarding.

What led you to a career in recruitment, and specifically HR recruitment?

My career background is generalist HR in the public and private sector. My last HR role was a workforce planning piece in the public sector where VANRATH were one of our agency staff suppliers. When I decided to move on from that role I contacted the team at VANRATH as I’d developed a really good relationship with them and Richard asked if I had thought about agency recruitment as a possible career change.

What sets VANRATH apart from other recruitment agencies in the HR space?

VANRATH's consultants specialise in distinct sectors and in my own case, I am a CIPD qualified HR professional who moved into agency recruitment 3 years ago. I can give expert advice and guidance to candidates and clients as I have worked in these roles previously.

What’s it like working at VANRATH? How would you describe the culture?

From day one, I’ve felt part of a high-performing team that genuinely values collaboration, integrity, and continuous growth. The leadership team is approachable, supportive, and always open to new ideas. There’s a genuine sense of camaraderie across the business; people are not just colleagues but collaborators who want to see each other succeed. We celebrate wins together and navigate challenges as a team. The positive atmosphere is consistent and motivating.

What’s the best part of your role at VANRATH?

The best part is having the opportunity to make a real impact — on people, on businesses, and on careers. As a Senior Recruitment Consultant in the HR space, I get to work closely with professionals who are at the heart of every organisation: those shaping culture, leading change, and driving employee engagement.

I enjoy the strategic nature of my role because it goes beyond just filling positions. It’s about truly understanding a client’s culture and long-term goals, then matching them with HR professionals whose values and capabilities align. There’s a real sense of satisfaction in knowing that the right placement can strengthen an entire organisation from within.

What makes this even more fulfilling is the trust and autonomy VANRATH gives me. I’m empowered to manage my own desk, build lasting relationships, and provide honest, consultative advice to both candidates and clients. It’s a role that challenges me to continuously grow while allowing me to contribute meaningfully to others' success.
