Job description

Our public sector client is seeking reliable and motivated Waste Resource Management Operatives to join their frontline operations team. This role plays a vital part in delivering high-quality environmental services that support local communities and maintain public spaces.

The Role

Working as part of a busy operational team, you will support a range of waste and environmental services including refuse and recycling collections, street cleansing, and Household Recycling Centre operations. The role is practical, customer-facing, and requires flexibility to work across different service areas as required.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Collection of domestic and commercial waste and recyclable materials, ensuring bins are handled and returned safely

  • Assisting drivers during vehicle manoeuvres, including reversing where appropriate

  • Carrying out street cleansing duties such as litter picking, sweeping, emptying bins, and removal of fly-tipped materials

  • Supporting operations at Household Recycling Centres, assisting members of the public and promoting recycling and waste diversion

  • Reporting vehicle defects, maintaining records, and completing required documentation

  • Undertaking alternative duties during adverse weather conditions, including gritting and snow clearance

  • Delivering council communications such as leaflets and notices when required

  • Providing a high standard of customer service and working collaboratively with colleagues and supervisors

Candidate Requirements

  • Basic literacy skills to follow instructions and complete documentation

  • Valid driving licence (Category B), with the ability to drive a council vehicle where required

  • Previous experience in a waste, environmental, or manual outdoor role (minimum 6 months essential)

  • Good understanding of health & safety practices, including manual handling

  • Flexible, reliable, and able to work with minimal supervision

  • Strong teamwork and communication skills

  • Willingness to work across multiple locations within the council area
