The Opportunity
I'm currently working with a large public-sector organisation to recruit an experienced Waste Operations Manager to lead the delivery of frontline environmental and waste services across multiple operational sites. This is a key leadership post responsible for overseeing collection, cleansing and recycling operations while driving service improvement and operational performance.
The Role
Working closely with senior leadership, you will take day-to-day responsibility for the management and development of waste operations including staff, facilities, budgets and equipment. You will play a central role in ensuring services are delivered safely, efficiently and to a consistently high standard while identifying opportunities for improvement and innovation.
Key Duties
Lead and manage operational waste services including collections, street cleansing and recycling centres
Oversee staff performance, attendance management and workforce planning
Manage budgets, monitor spend and support financial planning processes
Develop and implement service improvement plans and operational strategies
Ensure facilities, vehicles and equipment are maintained and fit for purpose
Produce performance reports and present updates to senior stakeholders
Liaise with internal departments, external partners and community stakeholders
Support policy development, risk management and business planning
Identify training needs and support staff development across the service
Deputise for senior management as required
Ensure compliance with health & safety, environmental and organisational policies
Support winter planning, emergency response and out-of-hours operations where required
Essential Criteria
Degree (or equivalent experience) in a relevant discipline such as Environmental Management or similar
At least 3 years' experience in waste operations or a similar operational service
Experience managing staff, budgets, facilities and equipment
Proven ability to deliver service improvements and manage performance
Strong stakeholder management and communication skills
Knowledge of health & safety and operational compliance requirements
Full driving licence or access to suitable transport
Desirable
Membership of a relevant professional body
Experience working within local government or public-sector services
Knowledge of regional waste management legislation and priorities
