The Opportunity


Our public sector client is seeking an experienced and motivated Scientific Officer (Landfill) to join their environmental protection team based in Belfast. This is a key technical role contributing to the monitoring and protection of land, water and air quality at a large, complex former landfill site.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and implement groundwater, surface water, leachate, and landfill gas monitoring programmes at a major former landfill site.
  • Analyse scientific data, write interpretive reports, and maintain accurate digital records.
  • Operate and maintain scientific monitoring equipment and ensure calibration and data integrity.
  • Liaise with regulatory bodies, consultants, and internal teams on environmental matters.
  • Assist in pollution investigations and support air quality monitoring efforts.
  • Supervise staff or contractors and provide technical training where required.
  • Contribute to environmental compliance, public health protection, and operational efficiency.


Essential Criteria

  • A third-level qualification in a science-related subject (e.g. Chemistry, Environmental Science, Environmental Chemistry, or Chemical Engineering) and a minimum of 1 year relevant experience
    OR
    At least 2 years relevant experience in environmental water sampling and landfill gas management without a formal qualification.
  • Full, current driving licence (valid in Northern Ireland) and access to transport.
  • Experience in environmental monitoring within landfill or similar industrial environments.


Desirable Criteria (Shortlisting Purposes)

  • Minimum 2-3 years' relevant experience (depending on qualifications).
  • Demonstrable ability to plan and deliver environmental surveys or monitoring programmes under regulatory frameworks.

Key Skills & Attributes

  • Strong technical understanding of landfill gas and water monitoring techniques.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication.
  • IT literacy including use of GIS, data loggers, databases and reporting tools.
  • Team working and leadership skills in operational and field environments.
  • Strong health and safety awareness.
