What you'll do
- To participate in the supply of medicines in the form of in-patient and out-patient dispensing.
- To ensure the appropriate interpretation of prescriptions prior to their preparation in the dispensary.
- To ensure prompt completion of prescription workload and regular overview of Prescription Tracker System Status.
- To assist the Dispensary Manager / Principal Pharmacist with all aspects of Dispensing and Distribution Activities in the Pharmacy Department to ensure stock is managed effectively in the delivery of a quality service.
- To effectively communicate and collaborate with the applicable Pharmacy Staff/Healthcare Professionals/Patient and/or their Carer regarding any anticipated problems in the medicines supply chain to ensure safe delivery of medicines and other pharmaceutical requisites.
- To assist the Dispensary Manager / Principal Pharmacist with work prioritisation and the optimal use of pharmacy staff in the Dispensary and Pharmacy Stores.
- To assist with the operation and audit of all aspects of Controlled Drugs Dispensing and Distribution in accordance with Departmental Procedures and NHSCT Controlled Drug Policies.
- To perform statutory controlled drug checks at ward/department level as allocated and also complete report for Senior Management as per Trust protocol.
- To assist the Dispensary Manager/ Principal Pharmacist with managing the operational/service to the standards required by the MHRA/Medicines Inspectorate/PSNI.
- To liaise with Clinical Pharmacists and Technicians to ensure that required prescribed medicines including Controlled Drugs are promptly dispensed and delivered to ensure seamless care is provided to patients.
- To participate in the dispensing of Clinical Trials medicines in accordance with approved procedures.
- To ensure compliance with approved procedures for the dispensing and distribution of Unlicensed Medicines.
- To be competent in the operation of all applicable Pharmacy computer and information systems used, including JAC Pharmacy and Medicines Management System, Prescription Tracker System, Patient Centre and NIECR.
- To lead on the implementation of drug recalls ensuring all relevant contacts are informed and recalled stock is dealt with as per Department of Health/MHRA instructions.
- To accurately prepare extemporaneous preparations utilising appropriate equipment e.g. isolators, fume cabinet whilst ensuring adherence to all relevant good manufacturing guidelines and COSHH.
- To assist the Dispensary Manager /Principal Pharmacist with the implementation and maintenance of the Falsified Medicines Directive in the Dispensary and Pharmacy Stores.
- To prepare monthly Patient Services Benchmarking Reports.
- To assist with the development, validation and maintenance of Patient Services Standard Operating Procedures.
- To assist with the provision of a Quality Management System within the Dispensing and Distribution Service.
- To monitor and take appropriate action to be assured that temperature records are maintained and reviewed on a daily basis using the Kelsius system.
- To ensure that regular temperature, audits take place and that results are acted on.
- To assist in the management of the pharmaceutical care of complex patients i.e. patient > 65 years, patients with significant co-morbidities, patients on high alert medicines (antimicrobials, anticoagulants).
- To ensure that timely discharge information is available to primary care health professionals.
- To identify and resolve identified risk management issues associated with prescribing and safe use of medicines.
- To assist in the further development and roll out of PCEP (Pharmaceutical Clinical Effectiveness Programme) ensuring that the documentation and dispensing are in line with Regional Cost Effective Choices.
- To participate in antimicrobial audit and assist with implementation of recommendations from the Antimicrobial Stewardship group.
- To review Drugs Liable to Abuse reports for designated ward/area and report concerns to appropriate Senior Pharmacist.
- To provide specialised evidence-based medicines advice on all aspects of drug therapy, tailored to the patient's medical social and cultural needs.
- To provide medicine related information and advice of a therapeutic, legal or procedural nature to prescribers and other healthcare staff ensuring effective prescribing and patient safety at all times.
- To communicate complex drug or medicine related information to patients and carers, tailoring the information to the patients specific needs. The patients may have language difficulties, physical or learning difficulties that require use of a variety of communication tools.
- To record pharmaceutical interventions/work activities utilising EPICS as per Trust procedures.
- To act as an internal Accredited Checking Pharmacy Technician (ACPT) mentor for Pharmacy Technicians undertaking NICPLD Training and provide on-going guidance/support.
- To contribute to the investigation of drug-related incidents and complaints as required.
- To plan and organise own work according to agreed objectives and timeframes for the dispensary
About you
Essential:
- M.Pharm in Pharmacy or equivalent.
- Registered with the Pharmaceutical Society of Northern Ireland (PSNI) or eligible to register
- Holds Certificate or equivalent relevant to hospital pharmacy practice or completing before 31st July 2025
- 2 years' post registration experience
- At least one year's experience in hospital pharmacy
- Hold a current full driving licence which is valid for use in the UK and have access to a car on appointment. This criteria will be waived in the case of applicants whose disability prohibits driving but who have access to a form of transport approved by the Trust which will permit them to carry out the duties of the post.
