The Social Work Assistant will be primarily responsible for assisting social work managers in the provision of quality social work services to children and families. He/She will work within a Children's Services Team and will undertake tasks allocated by the Social Work Team Manager to support social workers in the discharge of their duties. The Social Work Assistant will also be expected to ensure continuing professional development through training, supervision and learning in line with NISCC registration requirements.
What you'll do
Direct Practice with Children and Families
- Undertake work with children and/or parents/carers as directed by the Social Work Manager, Senior Social Work Practitioner or Social Worker in keeping with any support/protection/care plan and in their family support cases.
- The SW/ SP/ SSW would hold case responsibility, and the Band 4 social work assistant would be involved in and contribute to the overall assessment process commensurate with their role / responsibility. Their role will be supported through the provision of supervision and under the guidance of the case-holder. They would not hold carry a caseload independently.
- Undertake the arrangements and/or assist with the delivery of services, assessed by social work staff as being needed to support children and families. This will include supported work with children and families. On occasion attendance and contribution to reports for Trust meetings in relation to children and families.
- Complete delegated tasks such as co-ordinating family support, diversionary and respite services, sourcing appropriate family support services and other resources.
- Collate essential information about children and families and report this back to the Social Worker/ Team Manager to assist in the assessment of the families' circumstances and needs.
- Assist children and/or parents/carers with practical tasks including transport in respect of identified appointments, delivering advice and guidance in relation to parenting tasks for example routines and boundaries, behaviour management, homecare management, budgeting and essential form filling as necessary.
- Provide general information about services and sign-post to more appropriate services as required.
- Assists in delivery of contact services including the supervision of contact arrangements as directed. This will include transport issues and ensuring completion of appropriate documentation.
Governance and Reporting Responsibility
- Report to Team Manger and/or Social Worker immediately all identified child protection concerns, or other areas of concern or risk identified in the course of any work with children and families.
- Support social work staff as requested with administrative tasks in relation to making referrals to other agencies, setting up meetings, making arrangements for family time including room bookings and supporting with duty tasks.
- Liaise with other agencies in multi-disciplinary work, under the direction of social work staff or the social work team manager.
- Maintain clear records of all work undertaken.
- Provide written reports of any tasks delegated by social workers or allocated by the Social Work Team Manager/Senior Social Work Practitioner.
- Participate in the supervision process with the Social Work Team Manager/Senior Social Work Practitioner.
- Be accountable for own practise in keeping with their NISCC codes of conduct, ensuring it is of high quality and reflects best practice
About you
NVQ/QCF/RQF Level 3 in a care-related subject and 1 years' experience working in a social care role
OR
NVQ/QCF/RQF Level 2 in a care-related subject and 2 years' experience working in a social care role
OR
4 GCSEs (Grades A-C) and 3 years' experience working in a social care role.
*For those who do not hold Level 3, should be willing to complete Level 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care Support
