If “new job” is on your list for 2026, here’s a little secret: December is your secret weapon.
While everyone else is hibernating, you can be laying the groundwork to hit the ground running come January.
Here’s how to use the festive lull to quietly get ahead...
1. Freshen up that CV
When was the last time you looked at your CV with fresh eyes? As in properly reviewing it.
Make sure it tells the story of what you’ve done and what you’re good at. Cut out the noise, get rid of the old summer job from 2014 (unless it’s relevant), and focus on clear, punchy wins.
Example:
Before: “Responsible for managing team processes”
After: “Streamlined internal processes, cutting project turnaround times by 30%”
See the difference?
2. Get your LinkedIn in shape
Your LinkedIn shouldn’t be just a copy-paste of your CV. Think of it as your professional highlight reel — and recruiters do check it.
Update your profile photo (ditch the blurry selfie, please).
Use your headline wisely — it doesn’t have to be your exact job title. Something like:
“Project Manager | Passionate about process, data, and getting things done”Add some personality to your About section. People want to know about YOU, not just your job history.
Oh, and while you’re there — connect with a few recruiters. We’re not all bad.
3. Set your intentions (without overthinking it)
You don’t need a five-year plan. But it is worth asking:
What do I want more of in my next job?
What do I want to leave behind?
What matters more to me now than it did a year ago?
Whether it’s better work-life balance, a manager who actually listens, or finally breaking into a new industry — knowing your “why” will help you spot the right role faster.
4. Don’t wait until January to apply
Loads of companies are still hiring in December.
Sure, some processes slow down — but others are speeding up to secure people before year-end. And even if interviews don’t happen until January, getting your CV in now puts you at the front of the queue.
Also: recruiters are less busy this time of year. Translation? You might actually get more attention and a better conversation than you would in the mad rush of the new year.
5. Rest, reset, and recharge (seriously)
If you are planning to job hunt in January, give yourself permission to rest properly over the break.
Come back fresh, focused, and slightly less burnt out than you were in November. You'll show up to interviews sharper and more confident.
Ready to get ahead?
December doesn’t have to be a write-off. It’s the perfect time to quietly sort your CV, polish your profile, and tee yourself up for a January job win — without the competition breathing down your neck.
