With tech evolving faster than ever, contract roles are becoming an increasingly popular option for both employers and candidates, but there’s still a lot of uncertainty and a few lingering misconceptions out there.
We asked our Senior Tech Recruitment Specialist, Jennifer Curran (who specialises in Temporary and Contract recruitment) to share their insights on where the Northern Ireland IT contract market is headed, what skills are most in demand, and what both employers and jobseekers need to know to stay ahead of the curve.
From rising demand in data and QA to changes in what candidates actually want from a contract role, here’s what they had to say...
"The IT contract market has seen a notable uplift recently, particularly in data-related roles. There’s also been a rising demand for temporary software positions, especially in quality assurance (QA). This growth reflects the increasing need for flexibility and agility in tech teams as businesses accelerate digital transformation."
"One common misconception among employers is that contracting is significantly more expensive. In reality, it offers greater flexibility, allowing businesses to move quickly and access highly specialised skills as needed.
For jobseekers, contracting can seem difficult to break into, but we offer step-by-step guidance to help them transition successfully. Many contract roles are long-term and can even provide more stability than some permanent positions."
"The highest demand is currently seen in Data, QA, and DevOps roles, as well as within the Public Sector and Energy industries. These areas are experiencing major growth, and contract professionals with skills in these fields are highly sought after."
"Employers should consider offering longer-term contracts to attract top-tier talent. While higher pay was once the main driver, many candidates today prioritise role stability and the opportunity to develop their skills in meaningful ways. Flexibility and clarity around contract length can make a big difference in securing the right people."
"We’re likely to see a significant move towards AI and data-driven roles, with a gradual decline in traditional support positions. As automation and machine learning become more embedded in operations, demand for data and AI specialists will continue to rise."
As the IT contract market continues to shift, staying informed (and flexible) is key. Whether you're hiring for a critical project or considering your next move as a contractor, understanding where the demand lies can make all the difference.
