IT Final Year Students – What’s Next?

With the end of your final year approaching and exams on the horizon, now is the time to start seriously considering what comes next for you and what you want your first role in industry to look like.

Some of you may have already landed your dream job, but for others, it might feel like a daunting task that you don’t know how to start.

At VANRATH we work with graduates’ year on year helping them gain their first, and often most important position. What we’ve found over the past number of years is that the graduates with the strongest CVs are often those who are first called to interview.

Some of the best advice we can offer any graduate is to take the time to discover the type of company and culture they want to work in, and to tailor their CV to match just that. Not only do you want to present your best skill set, you want to present your most relevant skill set to the company you are applying for. Here are VANRATH’s top tips for Graduate CVs:

  1. Make your CV stand out from the crowd. Don’t just copy and paste – format stealing is off putting.

  2. Academics – these are the first thing any recruiter or IT company will look at. Module marks are as important as the modules you have taken.

  3. Relevant work experience – the key here is the ‘relevant’ part. If you had a placement year as part of your course or if you freelance, include it in your CV in detail.

  4. Examples – don’t just tell people you can code in a certain language, tell us about a project you worked on using that language.

  5. Finally, if you’ve got some work that you can show off, put together a portfolio to really show off you talents.
