Skilled Operative/Deckhand

Are you looking for a Skilled Operative/Deckhand role? Interested in working for a well renowned organisation who's portfolio contains a wide range of commercial uses, including office, industrial, leisure, hospitality and media.

VANRATH are recruiting a Skilled Operative/Deckhand to provide a multi-skilled general operative service; assisting in Civil and Marine Works to provide various repairs and maintenance works onboard the Facilities Managements work boats. This will be for an initial 6 month period with the possibility of a permanent position.


Remuneration:
£14-£14.50per hour, alongside excellent holiday entitlement.

The Ideal Person


Essential Criteria:

  • Full UK Driving Licence for a manual car
  • A relevant health and safety qualification e.g. CSR Card
  • Relevant Boat Handling Qualification recognised by the MCA or RYA
  • At least one year's experience of building maintenance repair
  • Basic knowledge of Health and Safety legislation
  • Experience of at least one of the following trades:

o Joinery

o Plumbing

o Bricklaying

o Welding

o Fabricating

  • An understanding of basic risk assessments
  • Knowledge of a harbour and shipping environment
  • Capable of:

o Climbing and working on rough terrain

o Working on or near water o Working at heights

o Capable of climbing quayside and beacon ladders

o Capable of operating in an exposed environment during all seasons and inclement weather conditions.

Desirable Criteria:

  • First Aid Certificate
  • VHF Short Range or GMDSS Certificate
  • Forklift Licence
  • At least one year's experience in a marine maintenance environment
  • Experience of, or an aptitude for, a marine or yachting/boating environment
  • Hold an ML5 or equivalent medical certificate.


Responsibilities

  • To provide a multi skilled general operative/handyperson service.
  • To assist with maintenance, repairs and new work as required
  • To use power/hand tools and portable machinery provided.
  • To carry out various civil works i.e. drainage/sewage manhole repairs including related pipe work.
  • To work well within a team to given deadlines.
  • To move equipment, materials and furniture including heavy lifting.
  • To provide operational services for maritime events and festivals.
  • To undertake driving duties as required.
  • To ensure Health and Safety requirements are adhered to at all times, particularly during on-site maintenance working on or near water in the docks and quays and working in a marine environment.
  • To undertake any other duties as allocated.
