Recruitment consultants are not career coaches, so you shouldn't expect them to do all the hard work. They are experienced professionals who can advise on things like optimising your CV, however they are not there to make major changes or help you plot your career path.

You'll make a good impression if you write your best possible CV before registering with a recruitment agency. Being as clear as possible about what jobs you want will help the agency know which jobs to put you forward for.

Do your research before choosing an agency to register with. Like with all things in life, there are some great recruitment agencies and some that don't perform as well. Most agencies recruit just in their local area, but there are a small number of national recruitment agencies recruiting across the whole of the UK.

ecruitment agencies work with employers looking to hire and with people looking for work. The employer is the one who pays for the service, but only if the agency finds a suitable candidate. This is called commission.

Initially, an employer will get in touch with an agency to say they have a role on offer. Then the recruitment agency will either go through their current database to find matching candidates, or post the job online to source applicants with the right skills. When they've found suitable candidates, they'll put them forward to the employer for review.
