Searching for a new job can feel like a full-time job in itself. One minute you’re feeling motivated, the next you’re wondering if anyone is actually reading your applications.
We spoke to our Senior Recruitment Specialist, Suzanne Lowry, who shared some straightforward advice that genuinely makes a difference. No fluff, just things that work.
Do your homework on employers
It’s tempting to fire off the same CV to every role, but that approach rarely lands well.
Spend a bit of time getting to know the company. What do they stand for? What have they been up to recently? What kind of people do they hire?
This gives you an edge straight away. You can tailor your CV, speak their language in interviews, and show that you actually want this job, not just any job.
Keep building your skillset
If things are a bit quiet on the application front, use that time wisely.
Short courses, certifications, even self-led learning can strengthen your profile. It also shows initiative, which employers love.
You don’t need to reinvent yourself overnight. Even small additions to your skillset can make your application more competitive.
Practice interviews (yes, really)
Most people only start thinking about interview answers after they’ve been invited in. By then, it’s a bit late.
Run through common questions. Practice your answers out loud. Get a friend to throw a few curveballs your way.
It might feel awkward, but it helps you come across more confident, clear, and prepared when it matters.
Give your CV and LinkedIn a proper refresh
If your CV hasn’t been updated in a while, now’s the time.
Focus on recent experience, measurable achievements, and skills that are relevant to the roles you’re applying for. The same goes for your LinkedIn profile — recruiters will check it.
A strong, up-to-date profile can open doors even when you’re not actively applying.
Stay consistent (even when it’s frustrating)
Job searching can take longer than expected. That’s normal.
Keep applying, follow up where it makes sense, and don’t be afraid to tweak your approach if something isn’t working.
Progress isn’t always instant, but consistency pays off.
Mindset matters more than you think
It’s easy to get disheartened, especially if you’re not hearing back straight away.
Try to keep a level head. Take breaks when you need to. Celebrate small wins, whether that’s landing an interview or getting positive feedback.
Confidence shows, even on paper.
The right role is out there. It just takes a bit of strategy, consistency, and patience to find it.
Stick with it, keep improving where you can, and back yourself along the way.
