Becoming More Confident About Public Speaking at Work

Few things at work trigger more panic than hearing: “Would you mind presenting that to the team?” Your brain is screaming no thanks, and you’re half-considering pulling the fire alarm to avoid it.

Most of us hate it, but avoiding public speaking won’t do you any favours in your career. Like it or not, being able to articulate ideas clearly and confidently is one of the fastest ways to get noticed (for the right reasons). And confidence isn’t something you’re either born with or without. It’s something you can build and if you keep dodging it, you’re holding yourself back.

Reframe the Fear: No One’s Picking You Apart

A lot of nerves come from thinking “Everyone’s judging me.” They're not (probably). Most people in the room are too busy worrying about their own workload or checking their phone under the table.

Yes, some people might zone out. No, it doesn’t mean you’re terrible — it means they’re human. Instead of picturing critics waiting to tear you down, imagine you’re just explaining something useful to a group of mates. Strip it back to what it really is: a conversation, not a trial.

Preparation Is the Secret Weapon

Confidence doesn’t come from “being a natural.” It comes from being prepared. If you know your content inside-out, your nerves don’t stand a chance.

Example: Instead of writing a script word-for-word (which makes you sound robotic when you forget a line), break your talk into three bullet points. These become your anchor. Even if you blank, you can recover by going back to one of those points.

Another trick? Practise answering potential questions out loud. Anticipating the curveballs makes you feel ten times more in control.

Practise Properly (Yes, Out Loud)

Rehearsing in your head RARELY works. Sure, you sound great in your brain but then it comes out as mumbling soup when you actually say it.

The fix is to practise out loud. Record yourself on your phone or practice with a trusted friend, colleague, or partner. Notice if you ramble, repeat yourself, or have a “go-to” filler phrase (“basically…”, “sort of…”, “at the end of the day…”). Cut those down.

It feels cringe, but nothing builds confidence faster than hearing yourself improve.

Stop Undermining Yourself Before You Begin

If you start a presentation with “Sorry, I’m not great at this” or “This might be a stupid idea but…”, you’ve already lost half the room. You’ve told them not to take you seriously.

If you don’t believe in what you’re saying, why on earth should anyone else?

Instead, start strong: “Here’s what I want to show you…” or “This is the key takeaway…” It instantly shifts the tone from apologetic to confident.

Body Language Matters More Than You Think

Stand tall, get those shoulders back, and make eye contact. It tells the room “I’ve got this,” even if your stomach’s doing cartwheels.

Small hack: If your hands shake when you’re nervous, hold a pen or clicker. It gives them somewhere to go and makes you look more controlled.

Start Small, Then Stretch

You don’t get confident by avoiding public speaking — you get confident by doing it in small, manageable doses.

For example: Volunteer to give the project update in your team huddle. Then try presenting to a client with a colleague backing you up. Then, when the chance comes to present at a bigger meeting, it won’t feel like jumping into cold water — more like turning the temperature up gradually.

Repetition WILL Help Your Confidence

Public speaking at work isn’t easy, but it’s a skill you can master. The more you prepare, practise, and put yourself forward, the less terrifying it becomes. Eventually, it stops being “the thing you dread” and becomes “the thing that makes people remember you.”

If you keep dodging opportunities to speak up, you’re also dodging opportunities to be noticed, promoted, or trusted with bigger responsibilities.
