“Why do you want to leave your current role?”

Welcome to our series "What do I say to that?" where we help you answer tough interview questions!

Today's question is “Why do you want to leave your current role?”.

Without further ado, let's get into how you can answer it in a way that’s honest and professional.

What are they actually asking?

What they really want to know is:

  • Are you leaving for the right reasons?

  • Will you bring that same energy to their company?

  • Are you a flight risk?

  • Can you speak about a tough topic without slating your current employer?

  • Have you got a sense of purpose — or are you just drifting?

Basically, they’re trying to figure out if your next move makes sense — and if you’ve thought it through, or just fancy a change of scenery.

So, how should you respond?

Here’s your formula:

Be honest → Keep it positive → Focus on the future

Let’s walk through a few real reasons, and how to frame them properly.

Reason 1: You’re not progressing

Wrong way to say it:
“I’m stuck in a dead-end job where nobody listens to me.”

Better way:
“I’ve reached a bit of a ceiling in my current role, and I’m keen to take on new challenges that allow me to grow. I’m looking for somewhere I can develop and contribute at a higher level.”

Reason 2: You’re not aligned with leadership/culture

Wrong way to say it:
“My boss is a nightmare and the place is toxic.”

Better way:
“I’ve learned a lot where I am, but I’m looking for an environment that’s more aligned with my values and working style — particularly in terms of communication and collaboration.”

Reason 3: You’re underpaid or undervalued

Wrong way to say it:
“They’re taking the hand — I’m doing three jobs for one salary.”

Better way:
“I’m proud of what I’ve achieved in my current role, but I’m now looking for a position where my contributions are recognised and rewarded appropriately — both in terms of challenge and compensation.”

Reason 4: You just fancy a change

Wrong way to say it:
“I’m bored. Ready for something different.”

Better way:
“I’m ready for a new challenge where I can bring fresh energy and ideas, and continue to grow professionally. I want to be excited about the work I’m doing and the impact I can have.”

Basically...

  • Don’t slag off your employer — Even if they deserve it. It makes you look bad.

  • Don’t waffle — Be clear, direct, and honest.

  • Don’t panic if it’s a mix of reasons — You can sum it up without listing every grievance you’ve ever had.

  • Steer it back to why you’re excited about this role — not just why you want out.

Leaving a job isn’t a crime. Everyone does it. But how you explain it tells an employer a lot about who you are. Show them you’ve got self-awareness, maturity, and direction — and they’ll be far more likely to see you as someone who’s making a smart move, not running away from a mess.
